Wings of Ra Megaways: Slot Overview
Ra, the Egyptian god of the sun and sky, often isn’t depicted with wings, but artistic licence being what it is, developer Red Tiger has seen fit to give players Wings of Ra Megaways. Not for the first time in that this is a follow-up to Wings of Ra (a non-Megaways variant), which came out about 4 years earlier. For Wings of Ra Megaways, the gaming grid has grown, and chain reaction wins have been included, but the nucleus of the original, its Mystery Coins and royal symbol removal in free spins features have been rounded up and returned.
Red Tiger has expanded on the graphics when injecting the bigger grid, too, and Wings of Ra Megaways is a striking slot. Its base game takes place indoors in a fire-lit room of statues, hieroglyphs, and paintings, which is very pretty. As is the free spins location, which zooms outside, up at altitude, overlooking the Nile and a vista of pyramids bathed in golden sunlight. All very nicely done for the pleasure of Egyptian slot fans’ eyes.
Between 2 to 7 symbols can land on each of Wings of Ra Megaways’ 6 reels, producing up to 117,649 ways to win. All wins begin on the leftmost reel and matching symbols must hit on adjacent reels. A medium volatile math governs the ride, while the highest RTP you will find in Wings of Ra Megaways is 95.72%. As for bet selection, wagers of 10 c to $/€100 are up for grabs.
Card royals 10 to A make up Wings of Ra Megaways’ low pay symbols, then an Eye of Horus, an Ankh, a bird, a lady and a man symbol are the high pays. The reward for landing 6-matching royals is 0.2 to 0.25 times the bet or 0.5 to 5 times the bet for hitting 6 matching premiums. Wilds substitute for all paying symbols and land on reels 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Wings of Ra Megaways: Slot Features
Mystery Coins were central to the original Wings of Ra slot, and they’re back for Wings of Ra Megaways. Accompanying Mystery Coins are chain reactions and free spins.
Chain Reactions
Chain reactions begin when a winning combination hits on the grid. The winning symbols vanish, leaving spaces that are filled by symbols dropping into them. Reactions continue like this without limit, ending when no new win is created.
Mystery Coin
Mystery Coins cannot land from a chain reaction, only on an initial spin. All Mystery Coins in view reveal the same type of random pay symbol.
Free Spins
Free spins scatter symbols are present on reels 2, 3, 4, and 5. Hitting 3 or 4 scatters awards players 10 or 15 free spins, respectively. During the bonus round, scatters cannot land.
Mystery Coins can, however, and they are collected on a special progress bar when they do. Each time the bar is filled, the current lowest-paying royal symbol is removed from the reels for the remainder of the round. If a symbol is removed and a win is formed, any leftover symbols of the removed type on the reels disappear after the winning symbols do. After a symbol is removed, Mystery Coins no longer reveal the removed symbol.
It takes 15 Mystery Coins to remove the 10 symbol, 30 Mystery Coins in total to remove the J, 45 in total for the Q, 60 in total for the K, and 75 in total for the A.
Wings of Ra Megaways: Slot Verdict
In the wide, wide world of Egyptian slots, there’s room for a slot like Wings of Ra Megaways. It’s a step up from the original while keeping a lot of the features as they were. The game is also easy to look at, and using Megaways is like inviting a quasi-famous friend of the family to a low-key event to give it extra gravitas. On the whole, though, there’s nothing wow magic happening here, so even dedicated Egyptian slot players shouldn’t feel too devastated if they miss it.
One particular on-reels highlight was when a ton of landed Mystery symbols revealed one of the higher-paying symbols, triggering a chunky win. How chunky the wins can possibly get is a puzzle, though. The max multiplier noted on the help page was lower than hits that occurred during the review, so the 784.4x figure there is suspect. Stake range is relatively wide, which might be an indicator of winning potential being on the lower side for this game, so who knows.
Will anyone really care, either? Okay, that was harsh since the mystery feature has its moments and Wings of Ra Megaways won’t hurt your eyes for looking. Got a thrill from the first game? Then Wings of Ra Megaways should thrill just as much, if not more, than before, and imaginative players might have fun peering at the graphics and pretending they’ve gone through a bizarre time warp.
Poor
Wings of Ra Megaways is a visually appealing slot with some intriguing features, but overall, it lacks the excitement to truly captivate, even for fans of Egyptian-themed games.
