Testament Slot (Play'n GO): Overview

Play’n GO, one of the most productive developers of the year so far, manages to keep up a constant stream of slots. Most have been comfortably above average, offering high volatility and high rewards. With that said, they often do have a certain sameness to them. With Testament, they have broken the habit and really thrown down the gauntlet. Testament is the latest addition to Play’n GO’s metal series of slots and the loudest one so far. As well as basing their new slot on one of the harder thrash metal bands, they've also decided to really bring it by creating their highest potential slot to date. The final product is a lot more in your face than Play’n GO's recent releases and just what the developer needed.

A quick word on the band Testament. They might not be a household name, but they've been firing out albums since the early 80s. Any band to last that long has certainly struck a nerve with enough fans to keep them going through the years. With track titles such as Souls of Black and Into the Pit, easy listening this ain't. For a more mainstream comparison, Metallica's Master of Puppets album has the similar relentless riffs, drumming, and darker vibe you can expect. If that's not your aural cup of tea you might want to hit mute, because Testament’s Dark Roots of Earth album makes an ear scorching appearance on the soundtrack.

The band's artwork and imagery also feature heavily in the game which sets an apocalyptic metal tone. The game is set in what looks like the Red Keep's Great Hall from Game of Thrones and initially uses a default 5x3, 243 win ways set up. This expands during features which we will look at in a moment. The first thing to do is set a bet level which starts at 10 p/c and goes as high as $/€100 per spin. The game has a default RTP rating of 96.2%, but can be dialed down by providers due to the flexible RTP option on offer from Play'n GO so keep an eye on that. Big rewards come with a big volatility which Play’n GO has rated at 10/10, or 'Very High' which it kind of had to be given due to the hardcore theme.

The paytable, meanwhile, has an intensity that will be a little hard to convey in words. Well, royals are easy, and the J-A symbols use the band logo's font which is a nice touch. The 5 premiums include swords and shields, a hard man on a throne, a werewolf, a vampire, and a horned skull. Not a comedy then. The skull is the most valuable symbol, and a line of 5 is worth 12.5 times the stake. It can also turn wild on any base game spin, and will always turn wild on every bonus game spin. The wild is worth a little more at 15 times the stake for five of a kind and can substitute any symbol except the scatter.

Testament Slot (Play'n GO): Features

The scatter is the Dark Roots of Earth album cover and the game's most desirable symbol as it is the key to the features. Just 2 are needed in view to trigger the Song feature which comes with 3 spins. How they play out depends on the music:

  • Dark Roots of Earth – any wild that lands spreads up or down to create more wilds.
  • Cold Embrace – when a wild appears on the reels it is locked in place for the duration of the free spins.
  • Throne of Thorns – the reels are expanded to a 4-5-6-5-4 format which increases win ways to 2,400.

Get 3 scatters anywhere in view, and they trigger 9 Rise Up Free Spins. This round starts with the 9 positions of the expanded reels covered in blockers. When a scatter symbol lands, it removes the blocker symbol above it to free that position and increase win ways. If you manage to remove all of the blockers, then the enhanced Testament Free spins are triggered. This feature adds 3 more spins to the total and activates all three Song Features for the remainder of the free spins round.

Testament Slot (Play'n GO): Verdict

It's great to see Play’n GO disengage cruise control and put their foot on the gas. Testament is the big, ballsy, in your face slot that they have been overdue for, and is a welcome shot in the arm. Play’n GO is a company that has honed its craft to the point where they can coast effortlessly while producing decent slots. Slots that tick all the right boxes in the looks, gameplay, and rewards department, yet often ultimately fail to make a long lasting impression or many waves. Testament wipes the slate clean and is just the right slot to shake that all up. It both ups their game, and reminds players that Play’n GO still can make a big impact.

They’ve done this by cranking up nearly every element of Testament. The showpiece is, of course, the Testament Free Spins. If you can make it that far then expect solid rewards for your effort. On the subject of potential, we are talking about the highest returns possible with a Play’n GO slot at up to 20,000 times the stake which is much higher than the usual 5,000x we are used to.

The developers have gone large with just about every aspect of Testament. It easily out rocks the previous slots in the metal series Demon, House of Doom, Black Mamba, Sabaton, and even its successor Annihilator. The Testament slot makes them look like the local opening bands at a major international gig. To sum up, Testament takes the metal series, relaxes the win caps, and turns the attitude, features, and potential up to 11. Even players who have never heard of Testament the band, or appreciate thrash metal in general, will still get a kick out of that. Maybe just turn the volume down a couple of notches in that case.

Great

Based on the Californian trash metal band, Testament is a fast-paced, in-your-face, action-packed online slot with a good set of features, thrilling gameplay and outstanding potential.
