Rhino Rilla Rex: Slot Overview
Ready with an open mind players? Good, because we are about to delve into the world of Crazy Tooth Studios, a veritable rabbit hole in terms of online slot design. The good thing about Crazy Tooth is they tend to take you on some kind of bizarre Kafkaesque journey to someplace you've never been in a slot before. The not so good thing is that it rarely, if ever, works, or at best, works weird. Next on the dissection table is Rhino Rilla Rex, a classic Crazy Tooth romp full of strange ideas, finicky rules, and one-off presentation.
The game starts pretty harmlessly, it should be said. At first glance, it would seem the studio has gone for a quasi-futuristic approach, with hints of Jurassic Park going on. There are four Beast Prizes on the left-hand side, some Isla Nublar like flora in the background, and a jungle-y soundtrack interspersed with sci-fi sound effects. So far, so fairly normal, with just an unusual mix of animals to contend with.
Rhino Rilla Rex is playable on any device, offering stakes of 25 p/c to $/€12.50 per spin. It comes with three RTP configurations, so it's worth keeping an eye out for those if you're tempted by the prospect, maxing out at 96.2%. In each RTP case, volatility is high, and players get a hit rate of 28.92%. On paper, max exposure is rather decent, but the way Rhino Rilla Rex is set up makes it difficult to see how it could ever achieve it.
Now for a few curveballs. One rule easy to get to grips with is the Any Adjacent Pays system which creates winning combinations of three or more of a kind, starting in any position. As long as matching symbols are adjacent, they pay. This provides players with 3,125 ways to win on a game board made up of 5 reels and 5 rows. What's not great is the minuscule symbol values, like minuscule to the point you think they might be typos. First up are the four lower value tiles, these are green, red, blue, and purple icons that pay 0.04x the bet for 3, 4, or 5 of a kind. Next are the animal premiums, landing in 1x2, 1x3, or 1x4 in size for the rhino, gorilla, or dinosaur, respectively. These aren't much better, all paying 0.08x the bet for 3, 4, or 5 of a kind. There is a wild symbol, landing on reels 1 or 5 to replace any pay symbols, and hopefully, the features are able to pick up some of the considerable slack.
Rhino Rilla Rex: Slot Features
To get to the potentially bigger bucks in Rhino Rilla Rex, there are several extras on hand. These are the Team Up Feature, Team Up Bonus Spins, and Beast Prizes.
Team Up Feature
Landing any combination of premium beast symbols fully in view triggers the Team Up feature. For this one, the triggering symbols create a new game board, where cash prizes, multipliers, or tokens may land. Players get one spin and win the sum total of all cash prizes in view, increased by multipliers if one or more land. These could be x2, x3, x4, or x5, depending on which animal symbols triggered the feature. On an amusing note, the game combines the triggering beasts into a hybrid, such as a Rhino-Rilla, for example.
Team Up Bonus Spins
This is quite similar to the previous feature with slight changes. If a combination of at least 3 beast symbols lands fully in view, and at least one of them has a golden 'bonus' frame around it, then Team Up Bonus Spins are awarded. As before, the triggering symbols create a new game board. On its reels may land cash prizes, multipliers, or extra spins. Players win any prizes that land, win multipliers, or extra spins to keep the feature going.
Beast Prizes
On the left of the screen are four progressive Beast Prizes. Whenever a premium animal symbol lands fully in view, its respective Beast Prize increases in value. Beneath each prize is a meter with a different number of slots. Each token won from the Team Up feature, or Team Up Bonus Spins fills one of the slots. Collecting all of the required tokens awards the applicable Beast Prize, which have seed values of 5x, 25x, 100x, or 500x the bet for the Rhino, Rilla, Rex, or Rhino Rilla Rex prize, respectively.
Rhino Rilla Rex: Slot Verdict
Well, Rhino Rilla Rex didn't disappoint. It's got Crazy Tooth's unique brand of entertainment stamped all over it, with bits that aren't bad, other bits which baffle. The first 'what the' moment was when we discovered how much, or how little, the symbols are worth. It's not a major shock to see modest symbol values in a Crazy Tooth game, yet even then, Rhino Rilla Rex stands out. 8c for a five-symbol premium win (at €1 stake)? And here's us thinking the xRIP feature from Tombstone RIP was severe. Even Nolimit City could learn a thing a two about harsh brutality from Rhino Rilla Rex. Symbols did tend to land stacked at times, but still, ouch.
So this meant the review cycled between patches of small to no thrill base game spins, broken up by the Team Up feature. We'd like to include Team Up Bonus Spins as well, but that extra was noticeably less common. The Team Up was okay, there are cash prizes and multipliers up for grabs, so it's one way of winning some money back, maybe more. The other is the Beast Prizes, which like the pay symbols, possess modest seed values. And while the help docs mention a 5,000x cap on each of the Beast Prizes, we're guessing it would take a significant amount of time to build the prizes to anywhere near that level.
The collection system and growing Beast Prize values would suggest high levels of patience are required in Rhino Rilla Rex. But how much patience are players willing to put into a game like this? While potential might technically be quite good, it feels like you're constantly fighting over pennies which has an amusing, shock value at first yet quickly gets old.
Mediocre
Aside from morbid curiosity, there are scant other reasons to give Rhino Rilla Rex a look.
