Raging Rex 3: Slot Overview

Sixty-six million years ago, the dinosaurs had what the UK's Natural History Museum calls 'the ultimate bad day.' That was when a 6-mile-wide asteroid struck the planet, ending the reign of the dinosaurs, which had lasted a staggering 180 million years. Bad for the dinos but probably good news for us since it's hard to see how humanity would have thrived as it has while dodging massive, dangerous, toothy reptiles.

And so dinosaurs live on now in our dreams, nightmares, museums, and, of course, online slots. One slot which did well to keep the spirit of the dinos alive was Raging Rex, as did its follow-up, Raging Rex 2, from software designer Play'n GO. Now we've got the next instalment - Raging Rex 3. Like its predecessors, Raging Rex 3 is a lush-looking slot, possibly the most visually pleasing of the lot. With its animations, volcano, and foliage, it really brings to life an earlier, more terrifying period of the Earth's past. Vibrantly coloured, the artwork is impressive, setting Raving Rex 3 off on positive footing the moment it loads.

Like the previous two games, Raging Rex is played on a 6-reel, 4-rowed gaming panel with 4,096 ways to win. Its math model is medium volatile, Play'n GO having rated it 6 out of 10, whilst being available in a variety of RTP configurations, the default return being 96.2%. When ready to bravely test their luck amongst the dinosaur inhabitants, players may pick a stake of 10 p/c to $/€100 to get the rage rolling.

With its ways system, a winning combination is created when matching symbols land on at least 3 consecutive reels, starting from the leftmost reel on the panel. A bunch of 6 rocks, or something, with various patterns imprinted on them, are the low pays, awarding 1 to 1.4 times the bet for a 6 OAK result. Landing 6 matching high pays (of which there are 4 kinds of dinosaurs) awards 4 to 6 times the stake. Wilds are Rex and the Hatchlings, which substitute for any regular pay symbol. If six wilds create a winning way, it is worth 6x the bet.

Raging Rex 3: Slot Features

Rex and his Hatchlings play prominent roles in Raging Rex 3's features, both in the base game and in the three bonus rounds players can choose.

Rex

Rex is a fully stacked wild that lands partially or fully in view on reels 2 to 6. When Rex lands fully in view, it triggers a respin and moves one reel to the left, one reel per respin. Hatchlings remain on the reels as well, walking in front and behind Rex. Rex's last respin occurs on the leftmost reel.

Free Spins

Landing 3+ scatter symbols triggers the free spins phase of play, where the number of free spins depends on the feature chosen. For the first two bonus rounds listed below, 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatters award 7, 9, 11, or 13 free spins. Players get three features to choose from:

• Feeding Frenzy - During this feature, Rex is sticky and may move in any direction. A hunting target is chosen from the 4 dinosaur pay symbols at the start of the round, and whenever Rex moves across or stops on a target, it is consumed. For each sixth target consumed, Rex increases its multiplier by +1. Hitting 2, 3, 4, or 5 scatters triggers 1, 2, 3, or 4 extra free spins.
• Hatchling Mania - Rex does not appear in this round, but Hatchlings are sticky and may move in any direction. Hatchlings may bring multipliers of x2 or x3, which multiply together when used in the same win. Hitting 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatters awards an extra 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 free spins.
• Survival - This round starts with 3 lives. Whenever a dinosaur symbol lands in any of the 12 positions, it is eaten and refills the lives. Eaten dinosaurs are replaced by sticky Bone symbols, and their values are absorbed by Rex. The starting values are 1x, 2x, 5x, or 10x, and Rex's value is paid out when the feature ends. Each Bone symbol fills the bone meter by 1. When the bone meter is filled, all Bone symbols are removed, and dinosaur symbol values are upgraded by an amount equal to their start value. The bone meter takes 6 steps to fill at first, but it increases by 1 step the first two times it is reset - up to 8 steps max. If more than 3 scatters trigger the feature, a symbol upgrade is awarded for each additional scatter.

Raging Rex 3: Slot Verdict

For a good bit of dinosaur-themed gambling, it's hard to go wrong picking games in the Rex range. It's a series that's gotten bigger and beastier as it's moved along, with new features added as it's lumbered on. The original has stood the test of time quite well, and the follow-up Raging Rex 2 significantly increased the potential prize pot. Raging Rex 3 has left the max win alone, but it's swapped in a bonus round that offers something completely new, the likes of which the two previous games had nothing like in their arsenal of features while looking pretty darn fine in the process.

The other two rounds - Feeding Frenzy and Hatchling Mania, are quite similar in spirit to what came before, but changes have been made. One is the number of free spins awarded has been drastically reduced, potentially adding a greater sense of tense urgency compared to before. Giving Rex a hunting target and a rising win multiplier in Feeding Frenzy adds an exciting dimension, as well. Hatchling Mania is one that sort of links the games together, whereas Survival is the newest addition; its uniqueness on its own makes it worthwhile for Rex fans to give number 3 a crack.

As alluded to, winning potential has remained constant between part 2 and part 3, but at a decent dino-sized 30,000 times the bet, there is little to complain about. All in all, Raging Rex 3 progresses the Rex range nicely and shows that the series still has plenty of rage left in the tank.
