Millionaire Mystery Box (Big Time Gaming): Overview

Released in November 2018, it didn't take long for Big Time Gaming's first branded slot Who Wants to Be a Millionaire to make the headlines in the casino community. Unfortunately, for the wrong reasons. Ever since the day of the announcement, the community had been brimming with speculation about what would happen should you reach the top level in the game's free spins feature. Not long after launch date, a video was uploaded and shared by a community member who had become the first player known to gamble his way up to the maximum 50 free spins. Disappointingly, he only managed to walk away with a 300x win which, for a game with an advertised potential of well over 20,000x, was laughably small. Looking at the mega wins that have been stacking up on Youtube and on forums across the web since then, however, leaves little doubt of the true potential of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

Millionaire Mystery Box is a slot based on the 2018 Big Time Gaming release Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Playable from only 0.20 across all devices, the game utilizes a setup that is somewhat unusual for Big Time Gaming and that we have only ever seen in Books of Gods before if we're not mistaken. With 5 reels, 3 rows and 243 ways to win, it benefits from a Mystery Box Reveal feature that can reveal any symbol, including special symbols such as the wild and scatter. Just as with the original, things get significantly more interesting when you get to park your bottom in the Hot Seat where up to 24 free spins can be won along with a multiplier of up to 50x.

Booting up to the tune of the game show theme song, the studio looks exactly the way we remember it from Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, complete with the neon setting and the hot seat positioned behind the transparent reels. The symbols are the same as well, represented by 9 through to A royal values and the more rewarding green, blue, red, and purple gems. The latter is the most lucrative, giving you 25 times your stake for a five of a kind combination. The 2x multicolored symbol is the wild - it appears on the three central reels only, doubles all wins and will even multiply each other if more of them connect.

Just as the title of the slot suggests, this version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire comes with a Mystery Box feature. Available on the three central reels only, when the Mystery Box symbol appears in view, all instances of it will transform into a random symbol, including wild and scatter. This helps create winning combinations as well as a chance to get access to the free spins.

No Millionaire game show slot is complete without a Gamble feature that's why Big Time Gaming has made sure to implement one here as well. In the Millionaire Mystery Box slot, it comes into play whenever you land a winning combination in the base game upon whereupon you're given the opportunity to double up. Essentially, this allows you to carry on gambling your win, doubling it step by step until you either hit the roof or decide to walk away with your win.

In the original slot, you could gamble your way up to 50 free spins. In Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Mystery Box, things are done a bit differently. Before anything, you need to land 3 or more scatter symbols in order to gain access to the Free Spin round - this will start you off with 7 spins. Now, to the left of the reel set you will notice a ladder arrangement with extra spins and multipliers. Every scatter that appears in view during the free spins round will move you up the ladder, increasing the win multiplier whilst also adding extra spins to the total. Collecting all 11 scatters need to reach the top will grant you a 50x win multiplier.

Reaching the top doesn't necessarily mean you'll run out of free spins as every scatter that lands after that will continue to award an extra spin. In terms of potential, you could be looking at wins of up to 12,000 times your stake here. Massive, in other words.

Millionaire Mystery Box (Big Time Gaming): Verdict

In some ways, Millionaire Mystery Box a cross between WWTBAM and Opal Fruits. It's built on the thematic backbone of the original, but incorporates plenty of fresh new elements that, in our opinion at least, make it, not only a completely different game altogether, but a significantly better one as well. Why exactly, you might ask. Well, first of all, we're intrigued by the fact that Big Time Gaming has opted to go for a more traditional reel mechanic this time around, you know, being the inventors of the Megaways engine and all. And to be perfectly honest, we're also glad to see that the free spins gamble feature has been left out which we were never huge fans of anyway.

It may not be Big Time Gaming's most innovative creation, but the execution is flawless and the multiplier ladder is an excellent fit for the game show theme. Fundamentally, what you get is a no nonsense kind of slotting experience where all you have to worry about is the gas and brake pedals. At the end of the day, Millionaire Mystery Box is another top high variance slot for thrill seekers to enjoy.

If you're on the lookout for something more innovative, we suggest you have a look at Monopoly Megaways which is a branded title based on the iconic board game Monopoly and the second Big Time Gaming slot to feature the Reel Adventure mechanic. Alternatively, check out Survivor Megaways - another branded title based on the famous Survivor reality show.

Good

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Mystery Box succeeds in reinforcing the defining foundations of the Millionaire legacy, but as a slot it could have been better.
