Massive Gold: Slot Overview
If it ain't broke, pshh, might as well use it again, right? This seems to be the thinking behind Massive Gold from Games Global partner Snowborn Games. Massive Gold follows in the footsteps of slots like Pile 'Em Up, Tippy Tavern, and Fish 'Em Up, supplying a similar group of features and gameplay. This means extras such as cash symbol collects, a collect symbol multiplier, free spins, a hold 'n win bonus, and a buy feature. It's not a digit-for-digit clone, but it's very close, so if you liked what came before, Massive Gold looks set to deliver a repeat performance.
This time, Massive Gold does not do so not amongst fish, leprechauns, or a cartoon garden but is set in a world that attempts to awe with all manner of shiny objects. Or, as the game sheet puts it, players are invited to the 'dazzling world of Massive Gold, an online slot filled with gold, diamonds, shimmer, and neon.' That neatly sums up the game's appearance, where the active gaming board is backgrounded by a blue star pattern, animated as if players are diving deeper and deeper into it. It's not hugely dazzling when the reels are at rest, but once they start spinning and Massive Gold's fairly substantial set of features start firing, a certain level of dazzle is possible.
If we dive deep enough into Massive Gold, we come across its inner engine, which is medium volatile and available in a trio of RTP configurations, defaulting at 96%. At this value, the game comes with a hit rate of 27.62%. Played on a 5-reel, 3-row symbol grid, its 20 paylines are used for evaluating wins along, left to right, starting from the leftmost reel. Massive Gold takes bets of 20 p/c to $/€50 per spin, and players can buy the free spins round for 50 times the stake.
On the symbol side of Massive Gold are 8 regular pays. They are divided into J-A card royal low pays, then higher paying dice, a bell, sevens, and a gold dollar sign. Hitting a winning combination of 5 low-pay symbols pays 1 to 2.4 times the bet or 7 to 17 times the bet for the high-pay symbols. Wilds may land on all reels, as well. Wilds pay up to 100x the bet for landing a 5 wild winning line, and they can be used to replace any other regular paying symbol.
Massive Gold: Slot Features
Several features come together in Massive Gold to help increase enjoyment levels. These are Collect Wins, Gold Booster, free spins, and a hold 'n win style bonus round.
Collect Wins
Gold Bar symbols land with values of 0.2 to 50 times the bet. When a Collect symbol lands on reel 5, it awards the amount of all Gold Bar symbols in view multiplied by the Gold Booster.
Gold Booster
The Gold Booster multiplier starts on 1x and increases when 1UP symbols hit and are collected - up to 10x. After the multiplier has been applied to a Gold Bar collect in the base game, it resets to 1x. In free spins, the Gold Booster multiplier does not reset until the round ends.
Free Spins
Hitting 3 Free Spins scatter symbols on reels 1, 3, and 5 triggers 10 free spins, plus a payout of 1.5x the bet. As in the base game, each 1UP symbol increases the Gold Booster multiplier. When reaching 4x, 7x, or 10x on the Gold Booster, +5 free spins are awarded at each achievement point.
Bonus
The Bonus may be randomly triggered by landing a Gold Bar symbol on reels 1, 2, 3, or 4 in the base game. The Bonus starts with 3 bonus spins on an empty grid. Landing a Gold Bar or Prize symbol resets the spin count back to 3. Gold Bars symbol, remain in position till the round ends. Prize symbols are the Mini (30x the bet), Midi (100x the bet), Major (500x the bet), and Mega (5,000x the bet). When Prize symbols hit, they are collected, and when 3 of the same type are collected, their prize value is awarded. Prize symbols are generally collected and removed from the reels, but the third winning Prize symbols will remain on the reels. If all positions are filled, then the Mega Prize is awarded. The feature ends when spins run out, or the grid is filled.
Massive Gold: Slot Verdict
After getting more or less the same gaming encounter for the fourth time meant Massive Gold wasn't the most massively exciting slot to test run. Not taking anything away from what Massive Gold can do, but you know, the novelty has worn thin by now. Of course, players new to this collection of extras may go in all wide-eyed, especially if they're in the mood for some glossy, classic slot machine-type action. Certain players must be lapping this format up, too, for Snowborn Games to keep releasing it, albeit with theme changes and other tweaks here and there.
For willing players then, Massive Gold provides another way of getting free spins; coin collects with a multiplier of up to 10x and a hold 'n win bonus game all in one place. Not hugely original parts on their own, more so since this isn't the first time the studio has done this, but having all of these features in one spot might come in handy, and Massive Gold, like its peers, has a busy pace that can help retain player engagement. The Gold Booster multiplier contributes to this too. Having a decent multiplier value stored in the base game could be an incentive to keep spinning till a Collect symbol hits in conjunction with some Gold Bar symbols. Max win is on the lower side, the same as Fish 'Em Up at 5,000x the bet, compared to 7,500x in the two other versions we've reviewed.
By the end of the review, Massive Gold provided an okay repeat performance. It's closer to Fish 'Em Up, slightly different to Pile 'Em Up and Tippy Tavern, which were basically twins with different outer wrappers. Not hugely excited when the curtains came down, but there's probably value here for players who've fallen for what's preceded Massive Gold.
Mediocre
Massive Gold’s set of features is getting a little old by now, but fans of glitzy, retro type slots may still be impressed.
