Legion Gold Unleashed is a follow-up from developer Play'n GO to its early 2023 Ancient Roman release Legion Gold. At the time, Legion Gold did not do much to impress, though it served later on as the basis for Detroit Red Wings Winged Reelers, a branded ice hockey game based on a real-life team, which also, failed to impress. However, someone, somewhere, must have been impressed because now we've got Legion Gold Unleashed, which, as the name would imply, offers a step up in entertainment possibilities. We shall see.

At the start of Legion Gold Unleashed, the camera pans down from a blazing hot sky to a blazing hot sandy scene. Since the Roman Empire extended to both sides of the Mediterranean Sea, or Mare Internum, as it was also known, it would appear that players find themselves somewhere in North Africa. Perhaps in or near Rome's great nemesis, Carthage. So great was the nemesis that Cato the Elder ended each of his speeches with 'Carthage must be destroyed' whether the speech was actually about Carthage or not. In 146-149, the city fell, destroyed, the people enslaved, and the ground cursed and mixed with salt. Don't mess with Rome, in other words.

Players who want to mess with Legion Gold Unleashed can do so by selecting a stake where the options go from 5 c to $/€100 per spin. Play'n GO has kept a leash on the math model, where the volatility remains at a medium setting, though the default RTP is slightly higher than before at 96.25%. The grid setup remains the same, where a 5-reel, 3-row game matrix is used and is covered in 25 paylines, awarding wins left to right from the leftmost reel.

Royals and animals make up Legion Gold Unleashed's pay symbols. For lows, it's got J to A card ranks, paying 2 times the bet for a 5-of-a-kind hit, then an eagle, a crocodile, a tiger, and an elephant as the highs, worth 8 to 20 times the bet for 5 OAK. In Gold Respins, Gold Coin Bags do not lock in place when they land, but they still contribute to resetting the number of respins to 3. If Gold Coins fill all of the spaces on the reels, the 1,000x Golden Prize is awarded, in addition to all Gold Coin values in view.

Mega Free Spins

Getting 3 scatter symbols on the screen awards 5 Mega Free Spins. On each free spin, a Mega 3x3 symbol lands in a random position. Mega Free Spins can be retriggered by landing the Mega Scatter, and up to 45 free spins may be won. Gold Respins can also be triggered in Mega Free Spins by landing a Mega Gold Coin. When this happens, the Mega Gold Coin breaks down to 9 Gold Coins with random values. After Gold Respins have played out, the game returns to the free spins round from whence it was triggered.

Okay, there have been a few changes, but do they really qualify as unleashed status? The Gold Coin Bag is a new and handy addition, but other than that… hmm, there isn't much else to report back on. Perhaps a more appropriate term would be rejigged, reshuffled, or squeezed since the gameplay hasn't moved very far on from the original Legion Gold slot.

A bigger number to aim at, but still, a pretty unexciting total in this day and age of 5, 10, 50, or 100 thousand times the bet and beyond. Of course, not all slots have to break records, but you know, boasting about being unleashed and all, like a wild animal let roaring out of its cage or a supercar cutting loose on the track after being cooped up on public roads, you'd be forgiven for expecting something a dash more rousing than what Legion Gold Unleashed ends up delivering.

And that's that; Legion Gold Unleashed is a mid-range slot at best, which might satisfy a casual gambler looking to virtually conquer another side of the sea with the Roman Legions and is not fussed about big numbers or cutting-edge, exhilarating, gameplay. As far as slots in the mid-tier go, Legion Gold Unleashed is an attractively presented one, further evidence of Play'n GO's willingness to drop visually appealing, though relatively weak, slots on the masses instead of really pushing its capabilities.
