Legacy of Oz Hyperspins: Slot Overview
You'd be forgiven for thinking Microgaming partner Triple Edge Studios has been scooped up by a tornado and deposited in a new world, such is their interest in all things Oz related. It started with Book of Oz, then Sisters of Oz, now the L. Frank Baum classic story returns to theme Legacy of Oz Hyperspins. The second part of the name gives away one of the features Triple Edge has included, but it doesn't quite stop there. The legendary 'book of' free spins round has received a couple of enhancements, some common, others more original. Legacy of Oz Hyperspins might not be a hotbed of innovation, yet it has enough of a novelty factor to entertain players into this style.
Legacy of Oz is basically a remake of Book of Oz, with an art update and extra rule change to free spins. This means it looks quite similar, where a 5x3, 10-payline grid has been located in the Wizard of Oz's pad, though in Legacy of Oz, the camera has zoomed out, so players can take in more of the setting, and the graphics are more defined. The same can be said about the soundtrack, which is new and evokes a slightly higher level of mysterious intrigue than the original.
Players can visit the wizard on any device, setting stakes from 10 p/c to $/€50 per spin. The RTP is variable, so be on the lookout for the highest value which is 96.11%. All RTP variations are rated highly volatile, where the default version pumps out wins at a rate of around one in three spins, or 30.49% of the time.
Legacy of Oz offers mainly standard 'book of' gaming, so winning combinations are formed when three low pay 10-A symbols hit, or at least two premiums. High pay symbols are the same as those used in Book of Oz, so we get three sorts of perfume bottles with keys, clubs, and lion stoppers, plus a Mr Green looking wizard as the most lucrative. Landing a full line of high pay symbols rewards players with a payout worth 60 to 500 times their stake.
Legacy of Oz Hyperspins: Slot Features
Back when Book of Oz was released, Triple Edge hadn't coined the term 'Hyperspins' yet. The same concept was used, but then it was simply called a 'Respin feature', though it did the exact same thing. As well as Hyperspins, players benefit from free spins where chosen symbols expand, and retriggers add additional expanding symbols to the round.
Say you hit the spin button, and 4 wizards land on reels 2, 3, 4, or 5. Wouldn't it have been so much better if the 5th symbol one had landed on the first reel? With Hyperspins, you can spin individual reels rather than all five. Cost depends on a host of factors, such as what potential outcomes could be, and they do get pricey. It is possible to be sitting on 2 scatters and repeatedly respin a reel until the third one hits. If you change bets between spins, the Hyperspin will automatically change the cost to reflect the different stake level. Also, Hyperspins are only available in the base game.
When 3 or more scatter symbols land, the bonus game is activated. Landing 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols awards 8, 12, or 20 free spins, respectively. Before they start spinning, one symbol is randomly selected from a book to be a special expanding symbol, given a yellow brick road background. In free spins, special symbols expand to cover their reels after normal wins have been awarded. Special symbols only expand when a win can be completed, though it helps that they pay from any reel, do not need to be adjacent, or start at the first reel. Expanded symbols pay all lines.
Landing 2, 3, 4, or 5 book scatters during the bonus round retriggers 4, 8, 12, or 20 free spins, respectively. In addition, whenever a retrigger occurs, another symbol is selected to be a special symbol, as seen in games like Legacy of Dead. It is possible to have multiple special symbols active at once, and they pay one at a time if more than one win is present on the reels.
Legacy of Oz Hyperspins: Slot Verdict
Legacy of Oz's core gaming is what you expect from a regular 'book of' game; Triple Edge wasn't quite brave enough to really get stuck in and make changes, which is understandable. Tearing up the 'Ra' rulebook can be tantamount to living on the slots devolvement edge. Instead, they've made a few additions around the edges so as not to go completely against the grain. Yet, while no one part of Legacy of Oz is particularly new, the experience as a whole offers a degree of originality. In a nutshell, this is Book of Oz 1.9 with a twist.
The most intriguing thing about Legacy of Oz from a connoisseur's perspective is the way only 2 books are needed to retrigger free spins and transform another symbol into an expanding one. Because of this alteration, retriggers did seem to happen more frequently in Legacy of Oz during the review than they normally do. It doesn't mean you'll collect extra cash from Legacy of Oz, though, since max win remain a respectable 5,000x the bet for a full screen of wizards, and RTP is roughly average, perhaps slightly above.
Like the mass of these competently designed 'book of' slots, players who enjoy the style won't miss anything giving Legacy of Oz a spin. It covers everything it should, while offering a couple of features few others have. The modification made to free spin retriggers appeared to make a noticeable difference to the experience, and Legacy of Oz was quite fun to play through.
