Alex on AE – “It’s a different side of the same guy”

Wow, if I didn’t know better I would think Alexander Skarsgard has made it his personal mission this week to make sure a few pervasive “perceptual” errors are well and truly sorted before Sunday’s season 4 premiere.

In an interview with the LA Times fanboy section “Hero Complex” (or maybe it’s the same interview as this one, I don’t know – there’s too much going on today and I simply can’t keep up), Alex continues his comments on what makes Eric tick:

GM: And obviously his relationship with Sookie is undergoing a bit of a change.
AS: She’s seeing this different side of Eric now, but it can’t be like she hated the old Eric, and now it’s the new guy and she likes the new guy and then he goes back to the old guy and she hates him. It has to be more complicated, more of a gray zone than that. It was just important for us to realize that it’s not like a completely different Eric. It is a different side of the same guy.

As anyone who visits this site with any regularity is well aware, Amnesia Eric is kind of my pet subject. Along with the blood bond, it is one of the most misunderstood aspects of Charlaine Harris’ novels – and consequently the subject of some of the most absurd theories and character misperceptions going in our beloved little fandom.

Cursed Eric is “Fake” Eric. He’s not “The Real Eric”. Sookie falls for a “stranger”. You know the ones, right? Oh, and of course there’s my personal favorite – Eric faked the amnesia episode entirely to get down Sookie’s pants.

There’s interpretation of the text – and then there’s wilfully ignoring the text in favor of what you want to believe; simply because it fits your unshakeable notions about character motivation.

Fortunately for the sake of our sanity and yours, Alexander Skarsgard has not only read Dead to the World, but actually grasped the point of it from his character’s perspective. And that can only mean good things for the coming season of True Blood.

On Sookie:

…She knows who he is and she knows that he’s dangerous and what he’s done in the past, but then she’s seeing this vulnerability and there’s goodness in there. I think she already saw that in Season 3, a little glimmer of hope there, and now she’s exploring it more. But I think it’s important to remember that that was already inside Eric, but he had this big wall built up around himself to protect himself.

Onion Eric, anyone?

Alex also has some wonderfully warm and funny comments about Kristin Bauer van Straten, loved by all as Pam:

She’s amazing. She’s so much fun. She’s fantastic on the show, but she’s also the sweetest woman you’ll ever meet and completely different. She is the biggest crybaby you’ll ever meet. She cries when she talks about a situation where she cried a couple of days ago. That makes her cry — when she’s trying to explain why she cried, she cries again. Human goodness makes her cry. When someone does something beautiful to someone else, she cries her heart out.

And here I thought I was already over excited about this season. I love that he reads the books, loves & understands his character & his relationship to Sookie so well. He couldn’t have said it better. My Skarscrush keeps getting bigger. How is that even possible? :D

I didn’t think it was possible to love AS even more. WOW he said so many things we all have said and thought about AE that usually we have to explain this from our perspective to get the point across. Only thing is that it comes off as just as our opinion lol but we don’t even have to defend it, AS just did it all and said it all before the season even started. We had CH saying how she agreed with someones analogy about AE being the real Eric and what we saw was Eric at his core. Those were the books though so we never knew what TB would do with AE, but it’s the same thing. This time AS went into way more details and really goes out of his way to explain it so people can understand and for there to be no misunderstandings.

I thought I was excited already but damn the next 3 days can’t come fast enough. Can’t wait to see the funny scenes they were talking about. Eric’s reaction after Sookie punched him cracked me up so I can only imagine what else we’ll see from him.

awwwww that was so sweet what he said about KB. When she reads this article, and sees that AS said she is a beautiful human being, that will make her cry lol.

I didn’t think I could possibly love him more than I did. “It’s a different side of the same guy”. Yep. He understands our Eric so well and he expresses himself so articulately. *sigh!*

I am even more exited. AS understands eric and all his diferent part of him. That sound promising.
If he talks about TB eric like this, I hope it means it is what we will see on the screen

Exactly what all of the above said.
Best thing HBO (AB?) ever did was Alex’s casting as Eric.
While some people involved really don’t seem to get it, he certainly does.

He summarized amnesia Eric perfectly. What he said about Kristin is so sweet. Their such good friends in real life and that really resonates on screen with Eric/Pam’s relationship. Kristin has teared up when talking about Pam and Eric. Alex said at Paleyfest that he wanted to make Kristin cry so he called Pam “his lovely daughter”. Pam and Eric do have suxh a lovely relationship. I can’t wait to see more of Pam’s emotions and her dealing with Eric’s memory loss. Eric means everything to Pam. Also, I am looking forward to seeing Pam and AE dynamic.

Sorry already posted but just wanted to say how great it was he read the first 5 books before he started – so he knew doing those early scenes where Eric was going to go and how he would develop and I think you can tell that when you are rewatching them.

Beautiful interview. I love reading his interviews. He seems like a very intelligent and thoughtful person.

And I also love that he said this “She knows who he is and she knows that he’s dangerous and what he’s done in the past”

which is such a contrast to how her relationship with Bill started out. She knows everything about Eric, she is walking into this relationship with her eyes open. There is no deception here. Their relationship is not based on lies. This is REAL Love.

    [Reply]

    Ashley Reply:

I agree 100%…it’s important to realize this, becuase Sookie knew NOTHING about Bill the first time they came together, other than that he was a civil war vet and he “saved” her from the Rattrays.

With Eric, Sookie knows who he is. She knows that he’s done bad things, and that he has goodness and real love in him..she’s seen it with Godric and Pam. But the removal of the baggage allows her to see that directed towards her, where before he was never comfortable expressing his feelings and often deflected them. It’s going to be great to watch.

Kristin said on an event that there would be coming a flashback about Pam and Eric, did she mean with that that it will be this season, I really want to see a flashback about Erics and Pams past, I love those two so much.

She also mentioned at some convention that there’ll be more to Eric and Pam’s past, but she never clarified when. It’ll either be later in the season or next year I guess.

Also I just wanted to that add. That picture…unf!!! How is this man so good looking!

After this moment of shallowness, I also want to add that I am happy Pam is getting her own storyline. She deserves it.

Eric and Pam <333. 2 of my favorite characters ever.

  • Thanks ASkars for being such devoted to your character. You should come here to SVB, you will enjoy it. ;)
Seriously, the man has explained AE in the perfect way… and now very little room is left for doubts. Haters to the left, please.

I also loved this other snippet:
it was difficult finding the right tone. He doesn’t know who he is, so all that baggage is gone, 1,000 years of resentment and bitterness, the whole, like, loathing humanity kind of stuff is gone. But there has to be an element of danger there still. I didn’t want him to become too much of a little puppy. It was about finding that balance, because he has to be extremely vulnerable now. [It] is great to see Eric, who’s usually the alpha male, pretty vulnerable — to find that while maintaining the element of danger there. I don’t think it would be fun to watch him for very long if he was completely emasculated.

I loved it because one of my worst fears in regards to TB AmnesiaEric was that he would come up too pussyfied, too emasculated. Vulnerability and disorientation OK, but if AE is RE at his core, he can’t be the polar opposite of RE and lose all his fierceness. He must still have balls.
Seems like I don’t have to worry anymore, because Alex got it. :)

One might think that ASkars was the telepathic one ;)
What a great timing to basically spell out who AE really is and the fact that it comes from ASkars is just awesome.
I love how he understands Eric and AE so well and how he explained it in such a perfect way.

And how cute was his comment about Kristin *sigh*. They are both so great on the screen and off. I just wanna give them a big hug :)
…. hmmm, come to think of it, if I were so lucky to hug ASkars I think I would just be hugging his six pack or something else lower than that, since I´m so short :D

Ditto to all of the above. Askars just gets the Eric that we book lovers (albeit I am to them after the show started) adore. I don’t think that any one could have been more perfect for the role of Eric. Kudos to him.

I also loved this comment AP made about AE and Sookie:

“She sees Eric in a whole new way. Sometimes it takes a slight shift in perspective for people to see what’s right in front of them.”

I thought that was very cool, and true as well.

I can so relate to KBVS cause I had tears in my eyes when I read this…I’m just a big crybaby too, lol. I love that she is such a sweet person offscreen but is totally Pam on camera. Yep, my girl-crush is still in fine form.

And as for ASkars…I think I fall more in love with that man everytime I read something he says or look at another picture of him or think about him…so all the time really, haha. :)
