Hallow, Marnie!

Announced earlier today, the casting of accomplished Irish actress Fiona Shaw as Marnie – better known as Hallow.

You may remember Hallow as the bitchy witchy who went to extraordinary lengths to punish Book Eric for his refusal to get in her pants and succumb to her attempted extortion.

I like to think of her more as a benefactor who unwittingly gifted us with “Eric Stripped Bare”, and the promise that we are rooting for the right team.

Whatever floats your boat, right?

Shaw has an extensive list of film roles to her credit, and is already well known for her role as Harry’s aunt in the Harry Potter films.

Although a little older than her book counterpart, I’m really feeling this Hallow. She looks almost exactly like I picture her character and like Denis O’Hare before her, we are once again getting a villain with the chops to make us squirm.

I think this is a briliant choice for Marnie/Halllow! I’m beyond thrilled that the character will be older than originally planned, and I quite simply likes the looks of Fioina Shaw for this role. She is much how I pictured the character.
I’m sure it helps that I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, too ;)

Yeah, somehow I’m thinking that aspect of the book plot won’t be part of the reason for the curse.

Does anyone know if Natasha Alam is signed for S4 yet? Yvetta’s dummy spit at Eric late in S3 was eerily reminiscent of Hallow’s…and I still can’t help wondering if the two of them aren’t connected.

IDK, they might be trying to ride the Cougar wave.

I will be seriously surprised if Yvetta doesn’t figure into this somehow. Otherwise, that whole “gold-digging whore” business will be one big, mean, pointless red herring. Which I wouldn’t put past the show… but still.

Anyway, Fiona Shaw totally ISN’T how I pictured Hallow in the books. But I’m 110 percent on board, because I definitely think she can deliver with this character. I’m even more convinced now that this witch plotline is going to venture into high camp Sam Raimi territory… and I’m WAY excited about it.

K, the first thing that came to mind.. she’s British, & if they keep her accent in,.. is she somehow related to Frankie? :)

According to IMDb she’s Irish…but she’s played a Brit in many of her film roles.

I don’t know that the accent will be a factor though – look at Ryan Kwanten and Stephen Moyer. Alot of American’s didn’t even realise neither was from the US until they were told as much.

Oops. I meant Irish, yeah yeah thats it!

I can’t wait to laugh at the irony of Aunt Petunia playing a witch. But I’d rather she did leave her accent in. And then I could make up some batshit cray cray Frankie theories, like of his identical but Irish twin brother. Named Mark. Stonebrook.

What was the casting call for Marnie again?

Fiona Shaw is Irish. Born and raised there, which surprises me because she speaks with an English accent. Still I think she’s great for the role of Marnie…and I can’t wait to see her deliver!

Oh Sean…I knew one of my fellow Irishmen would come out to claim his own ;)

(OK, so technically I’m not Irish, but as a resident of a “colony” – and member of a family who considers themselves displaced Irishmen (Carlow, apparently), I identify. Didn’t my swearing and compulsive drunkeness betray my heritage already??)

I tell ya Sean, I’m going there one day. It’s my soul place.

How dare you stereotype the Irish as a bunch of drunken, foul mouthed idiots?! :O

I joke of course! We do drink quite a lot and we are prone to an auld swear but its all in good fun really! :D

Carlow, eh? That’s actually a lovely part of the country. Underrated too. If you do go to Ireland, make sure to visit there!

Fiona Shaw!?? Wow! They must be paying her a fortune! She’s like the Meryl Streep of England! I’m impressed. But she’ll be amazing! Cool!

I’m quite encouraged by this. Fiona Shaw is a really fine actress, and although her Aunt Petunia shows that she’s happy to do a blockbuster, presumably for the money, you would hope that she would only take a part if it had some real substance to it. I’m thinking of her as the Denis O’Hare of Season 4 (although I hope D o’H comes back as well – he was just great).

I’m sure they will use her character very differently from the books just as Russell was – more of her, and more evil. Just as long as it means more vampire screen time, I don’t care.

This is a fantastic actress! I haven’t read the books, but I’m sure she can play anything/anyone to perfection.

I may be the only person on earth who has not seen any of the Harry Potter films, but I have seen Fiona Shaw in other things and I think she’s a fabulous choice. I applaud Ball’s choice of Denis O’Hare as Russell and I think we are in for another treat this season.

Addendum. Just remembered where I last saw her. She played Mrs Croft in the Amanda Root/Ciaran Hinds version of ‘Persuasion’ which I watched only a few days ago. I loved her in that role. She has one of those marvellous faces that can express a range of emotions within a few seconds. She’ll be great as Marnie/Hallow. I hope we have the pleasure of some scenes with her and Russell together.

I’ve never seen/read Harry Potter either, Millarca! Nor have I seen Fiona Shaw’s work before, but I can see that twinkle in her eyes turning quite deadly so I’m psyched! Like a few others, I feel that RE is going to have more to do with the TB version of AE than spurned romantic advances…..so bring it on, lethal Marnie!!

Millarca, Ive only seen one HP movie so you arent alone. But she is good in the one I saw. I know she will do a good job. I for one dont care if the looks dont fit the book description for most of the characters as long as they have the skills to back up the part, and I am sure she does. One of TB’s strengths has always been their casting.

i think she will no matter what, after Eric and this could be just hilarious since the way Eric called Yvetta immagie what he could say to her

Marnie is possed by a witch, Fiona is a middle-age woman but this spirit we don’t know the age, it could be the spirit of the Hallow we all know aka a pretty woman, so she would be fascinated by Eric, sexually XD, even if her body maybe not appealing to Eric XD

Btw Im so happy about this casting call…Fiona is Irish, Denis is Irish too,Ireland was full of Druids as Russell….everything seems to be just perfect!!
AB specifically wanted her since he changed the age…that’s sounds soo interesting!!

This could be REALLY good. Fiona Shaw can do the mousy, submissive woman (like in HP) and can really be a powerhouse (like she’d have to be as Hallow). I kind of like her appearance for Hallow too: long and lanky. But, the casting call says Hallow possesses her body, so really it doesn’t matter what she looks like. Probably she’s not a Were in TB, only a “necromancer” as AB says.

Fiona Shaw is a an awesome actress and I am sure she will be fantastic as Hallow…BUT, I was kind of surprised in this choice. Thought she would be younger….and I hate to say it….prettier. I hope they don’t have a scene where she tries to come on to Eric….cuz that would be just embarassing and not believable.

Fiona Shaw will be excellent. I hope she’s nutty as a fruitcake. She plays a great nut.
